Honoring our African American Ancestors of Cape Girardeau,
Missouri & Surrounding Areas
Following the 2024 reunion, members of the planning committee decided it was important to share our own history in our own words so that future generations would have an authentic record upon which to build. Our intention was to create a foundation that preserves and continues our family legacy. Our book was lovingly researched, documented, and written by six dedicated family members determined to keep our stories alive.
Over the course of two years, we engaged in extensive writing, research, and collaboration to complete this work. The manuscript was finalized in January 2026 and launched on Amazon for
economical printing purposes only.
Our book honors our ancestors buried here in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and the surrounding areas. Throughout its pages, we sought to connect families, educate future generations, and provide a deeper understanding of the lives and legacies of those who helped shape Cape Girardeau and its neighboring communities.
How You Can Support: While the book is available on Amazon, we kindly ask that you purchase it directly through our Shady Groves Heritage and Preservation Organization website (a 501(c)(3) non-profit).
